ReneeSendelbach.com - Renee in Cancerland

PROJECT DETAILS: Renee Sendelbach has a knack for bright, colorful designs used throughout her art pieces and her website. I wanted to help her become easily recognized by these things and fused together one of her famous "crazy flowers" art pieces and the metastatic breast cancer awareness ribbon in order to recreate the first letter in her name.

CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS: Renee has always been very open and straightforward with her wants and needs for her website, so when creating her logo I worked with the idea that she was taking ownership of her status with cancer by using art and blogs to reinvent herself as a stronger, wiser, and more spiritual being. I didn't want the focus to be on the color pink--a color associated with breast cancer--but I knew Renee never shied away from color, so I researched what the colors were for metastatic breast cancer and focused on these colors instead.

Metastatic breast cancer awareness ribbons are blue, pink, and green, and represent new hope and growth in someone who is a thriver, not a survivor. I really felt that connected well with Renee, and as a person who refers to her time with cancer as "Renee in Cancerland" (yes, a nod to Alice in Wonderland), I wanted to include one of her most iconic art pieces in her logo as well--a "crazy flower". I used the flower as my base idea and sketched out several looks, eventually settling on the version you see here with the flower and the ribbon creating the "R" in Renee--just two pieces of her life redefining who she was over time.

SKILLS/PROGRAMS USED: Pencil and paper was used for the original thumbnail sketches, then I used Adobe Illustrator to sketch out a flower and the ribbon, bending both to create the logo. This logo is scalable in design so Renee can use it for future products, or printed on business cards or postcards.
