This assignment required three raw photos showcasing three different approaches to lighting: one light source directly behind the object, one light source reflected off a bounce card and onto the object, and one with an additional light source placed to light the object. The object I used for this assignment is a paperweight glass bubble with a metal lion on top.
After each photograph below, a journal entry will be found containing all the meta data from the camera at the time of the photograph, as well as any comments or concerns I had with each photograph. Overall, I really enjoyed experiencing first-hand how much lighting can affect the subject of the photo and the mood of the photo, just by moving it around the subject. It was pretty fun to experiment with lighting. I also made my own bounce card from aluminum foil wrapped around a piece of cardboard.
Comments and Concerns: The way the light bounced through the glass bubbles made getting a photo that wasn’t blown out a bit difficult. After a little adjusting of the camera placement, I was able to get this one which also has some natural lens flare occurring on the left side.
Comments and Concerns: I made my own bounce card using aluminum foil and a piece of cardboard. The light source is reflecting off the top, left corner of the bounce card, giving a more natural and balanced light on the paperweight. I love the reflection of the light within the glass bubble.
Comments and Concerns: After playing with where I liked the light sources, I remembered reading that the best light comes from behind the photographer, so I had my main light source behind my camera, and my additional one reflecting off my bounce card. This darkened the room considerably, and gave me this amazing photograph. I’m really pleased with this one!
